English

Last term, we commenced studying a popular children’s novel called ‘Beetle Boy’, by M.G Leonard. Students of 6H have enjoyed discussing the characters’ motives, making inferences and forming predictions, all whilst following the intriguing storyline. Activities have involved students applying research skills to develop an information report on a particular beetle of their choice, using an online presentation platform called Prezi. Students have also developed and enhanced their persuasive writing skills through exploring a range of effective ads and slogans. They then used a variety of computer applications and technology to plan and design an advertisement for a beetle museum or other beetle related product. Later in the term, we will begin to learn how to create our very own short novels that promise to bring immense joy, suspense and enjoyment to the reader.

Mathematics

During Maths, we have gained valuable knowledge and developed reasoning and problem solving skills through a series of hands-on, real life context investigations. This term our focus is on selecting and performing efficient mental and written strategies when solving multiplication and division based problems. We are currently exploring and learning about the Order of Operations- known as BODMAS. At first, we found this concept a bit tricky, but with ongoing guided practice and application to a range of equations, we are beginning to experience greater success in this area.

Other Key Learning Areas

In Personal Development and Health lessons, students have discussed how different emotions and body language play an important role in our daily interactions and relationships with others. The implementation of the Positive Living Skills Program has allowed students to become more aware of highlights in their day to day lives. Through whole class discussions, students are learning the importance of focusing more closely on the positive aspects of their lives. We have also recognised and acknowledged our unique strengths and weaknesses, and understand that these shape each and everyone of us.

Our PE and Sport sessions aim to develop and improve our agility, speed and fundamental movement skills. We thoroughly enjoy participating in team running games, especially Bullrush and Jailbreak. Some of our favourite sports to play include tee-ball and netball. We understand the importance of modeling good sportsmanship and respecting rules of the game at all times.
