5S
Mrs Shore
English
During semester 1, 5S read a novel called “Riddle of the Trumpalar”. It is about some children who are trying to save the Trumper Tree from being cut down. They have many adventures, meeting the Trumpalar in Trumperland and going back in time to meet Mary Sinclair who provides them with the relevant information. 5S investigated Moreton Bay Figs and why it is necessary to have green spaces in cities. We were able to learn more about the convicts in early Australia. We also learnt how to draw trees which we could transform into our own impressions of a Moreton Bay Fig.
This semester we are focusing on informative texts. At the moment 5S is researching an explorer and learning how to present this information to the class.
Maths
In Maths, 5S have been enjoying working in co-operative groups to solve different problems. During semester 1, we investigated the properties of 2 Dimensional shapes. We worked in groups to list features of various shapes and used matchsticks to prove the Triangle Inequality Theory which relates to the length of the sides in a triangle. We also learnt more about equivalent fractions and how we can generate them.
This term we are moving onto decimal numbers and how we can use them in everyday life.
History
Last semester 5S looked at the reasons why Australia was chosen as the site for the new colony and investigated the effects of European settlement on the First Nations People of Australia and the land. Each student researched an early explorer and will now present their information to the class in the next few weeks.
