English

For the past two weeks, 2C have been studying the text ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’ by William Kamkwamba. The learning intention for students has been for them to identify and use proper nouns. Students discussed the similarities and differences between William’s village, Wimbe (Africa) and our town, Parkes.

During week 3, 2C will be debating whether or not they would prefer to live in Wimbe or Parkes. They will be required to pick one option and provide reasons for their choice.

Maths

For week 1 of Mathematics, 2C participated in inquiry-based learning and were given a large amount of numbers. They were asked, “how can you sort these numbers?” Students worked in pairs and came up with a variety of methods including, smallest to largest, largest to smallest, 1-digit, 2-digit or 3-digit numbers or the place value of the digit.

During week 2, 2C were asked the question “how far can a ball roll?” In groups, students had to select a unit of measurement to explore how far their ball had rolled. 2C were asked to provide justification as to why they’d chosen a particular informal or formal unit. They will be comparing and discussing the most effective choices later this week.

Creative and Performing Arts

During week 1, 2C experimented with miming during drama. Groups were asked to choose an everyday task to mime for their peers to guess. Groups chose activities, such as grocery shopping, washing the car, exercise and capturing Pokémons. Students also experimented with “getting into character” when using puppets to explore voice changes.

In week 2’s creative arts lesson, 2C were inspired by the text “The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind” and created pinwheels to help them understand how they’re similar to the windmill that the main character, William built his village in Africa.
